Detroit Man with Down syndrome Recovers from Covid-19
COVID-19 recovered nearly 100,000 Michiganders. However, some patients may have a long way to recovery. Earlier this year, a man from Detroit with Down’s syndrome contracted. After his battle, Demetrius Shelton was 28 years old. Demetrius had been diagnosed with COVID-19 in April, at the DMC Sinai-Grace Hospital.
Tamika Simmons says her son has Down syndrome but has no other health problems. Until he was hospitalized, she was never separated from Demetrius and she could not be by his side due to the pandemic.
She explained: “It was very difficult not to know what was happening to my (my) son.” “Every time I got a physician call it was hard. “Demetrius could not communicate and three different times had to be put on the fan. “I needed to have all the trust in the world in each doctor who called me. This is all I can do, “she said.

After he was on the mend, Tamika finally got a video from Demetrius, but some of his recoveries learned to go again.
Despite difficulties with communications and the absence of his mother, the physical therapist says Demetrius had a positive attitude.
“He generally had a grin all over and he generally put a grin all over whoever was around him,” she said.
In June, Demetrius was finally prepared to go home. Tamika says Demetrius needed a wheelchair. He could now walk alone.
