Know Why You Must Eat Blueberries Every Day

“People have been eating blueberries for more than 13,000 years. The blueberry is one of the only foods that are truly naturally blue in color. The pigment that gives blueberries their distinctive color — called anthocyanin — is the same compound that provides the blueberry’s amazing health benefits.”

As it refers to food, berries in terms of nutrition are where they are at. They may seem like a favorite drink in the summer. But they should be on your table all year round (from featuring in a smoothie to topping a salad for dinner) — especially blueberries. Blueberries are powerhouses filled with antioxidants, limited in nutrition. They are suspected of helping stop everything from Alzheimer’s to cancer.

That is far from all of these teeny berries’ health benefits. They do everything from warding colds away to giving a boost to your gym sessions. Here’s what to know about the berries.

1. During winters, they could help keep you healthy.

Forget about an apple a day. Since blueberries are packed with vitamin A and vitamin C, consuming them could keep the doctor away from this season of cold and flu! Vitamin A increases immunity, while C serves as a potent antioxidant. A low dose of zinc can also help ward off a cold or reduce it. During wintertime, fresh berries are hard to find or too pricey. At that time, use frozen berries. They are frozen but have the same nutrients.

2. They are among the healthiest berries.

Blueberries contain plenty of phytonutrients and antioxidants in relation to other berries that help improve cognitive and cardiovascular health and treat diseases like diabetes and cancer. They also promote eye health and reproductive health (via vitamin A) and provide folate, a B vitamin that has been shown to help the development of DNA and reduce the risk of stroke.

3. These are incredibly high in antioxidants.

This type of berry is top for antioxidant packing, substances that help avoid cell damage and fend off all sorts of conditions of health. All the blueberries produce prominent antioxidants, but wild blueberries have the most. A few research suggests that wild blueberries have more and a greater variety of antioxidants than high-bush or farmed, but both rank high in antioxidant properties among fruits, so they are a great alternative on whatever you choose.

4. They help you stay filled up.

A cup of blueberries has 4 grams of fiber. It keeps you healthy by taking up space in your stomach and gradually digesting. High water content (124 grams per cup) will also help you stay more content.

5. Blueberries help in your exercise.

Blueberries are an excellent way to maintain the glycogen (the go-to energy source of your muscles) during and after workouts, with a fast dose of carbs and sugar. That is particularly important if you are doing long sessions of exercises that might leave your muscles tired. The potassium frequently assists improve muscle function and improves cardiovascular health as well.

6. They step up your breakfast.

Blueberries are the perfect addition to yogurt or smoothies with fiber and taste. In your rice or oatmeal or on top of waffles or pancakes, you might add a couple too. (Grains can help you consume other nutrients like calcium, while butter, nuts or milk with some fat will help you absorb fat-soluble vitamins like A and K.)
